Galway East TD and Minister of State for the OPW, Mr. Sean Canney is to meet with senior officials in the Department of Communications in the New Year regarding the company’s rollout of e-fibre in the constituency which he is describing as “baffling.”
Minister Canney said he is becoming increasing concerned that the ‘hit and miss’ approach being taken by Eir in relation to the rollout of the service is leaving local businesses and communities completely frustrated and dissatisfied.
“It appears to me that there is no systematic rollout of e-fibre in Galway East, rather it seems that the service is being introduced in a haphazard manner where some areas are receiving it and others nearby are not,” said Minister Canney.
“It looks to me that the service is being delivered in pockets in rural areas. They are providing service to some sections of the community and not to others. I have come across instances where some houses on roads are getting the service while others are not,” said Minister Canney.
“I believe that logic is not prevailing and the rollout is not being done in a practical way. To me it seems that Eircom are populating services in a disjointed way in a bid to deter other providers in the future and making it less attractive to Eir’s future rival bidders for contracts.”
“I have already raised this issue with Communications Minister, Denis Naughten and I have arranged a meeting with senior officials in the Department of Communications in early January in an effort to bring some sort of logic to this mess.”
