Minister Canney confirms over €63.3m in 2026 National, Regional and Local roads funding for Galway County Council for projects in the county

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has confirmed €63,332,150 million in national, regional and local road funding for projects across County Galway as part of the 2026 roads investment programme.

The funding includes significant allocations for national road upgrades, regional and local road improvements, safety works, bridge rehabilitation and climate adaptation measures, supporting safer travel, improved connectivity and long-term resilience for communities across east Galway.

“This funding represents a major investment in Galway’s road network. It supports strategic national routes, critical local links, safety upgrades and climate resilience works, ensuring communities are better connected and protected while also supporting economic activity across the region,” Minister Canney said.

Minister Canney also noted that €4.5 million has been allocated in 2026 for the Galway City Bypass project, under the New Roads programme, reflecting its importance as a strategic national infrastructure project for the wider Galway region.

National Roads & Strategic Projects (Galway East)
Key national and strategic road investments in Galway East include:

• N17 Milltown- Gortnagunnad Realignment (minor works) – €1,850,000
• N83 Pavement Works (Claregalway area) – €2,500,000
• N83 Claregalway Traffic Calming & Pavement Restoration – €1,500,000
• N63 Liss–Abbeyknockmoy Realignment – €1,000,000
• N84 Clonboo Pedestrian Crossing & Junction Improvements – €103,500
• N83 Parkmore Junction Improvements – €100,000

Specific Improvement Grant:

• R332 Kilbannon Road Upgrade and Realignment – €2,500,000
• R339 Bellville Realignment (bad bend) – €10,000

Strategic Regional and Local Roads Programme:

• Athenry Relief Road – €2,000,000
  Works commenced in Q3 2025 and are progressing well.

 Bridge Rehabilitation Works (Galway East)

Bridge rehabilitation funding in Galway East includes:

• Carnakelly North Bridge – €180,000
• Mountain Park Bridge – €125,000
• Allendarra Bridge – €100,000
• Suck East Bridge – €60,000
• Killaclogher Bridge – €50,000
• Gunnode Bridge – €20,000
• Moaty Townland Bridge – €20,000

Road Safety Improvement Works (Galway East)

Safety improvement funding for Galway East includes:

• L3107 Monivea Road, Athenry – traffic calming (€75,000)
• R446 Kilreekill – upgrade works & traffic calming (€61,228)
• R360 Peak Hill, Dunmore – visibility splays, linemarking & signage (€50,000)
• Casey’s Cross, Clarinbridge – realignment works (€50,000)
• L2123 Corofin – linemarking, speed-activated signage & traffic calming (€50,000)
• R3116/L3117 Tample Cross – junction realignment (€40,000)
• R362/L2317 Creggs (at the rugby facility) – traffic calming (€35,000)
• R347 Cemetery Cross, Athenry – footpath & lighting (€30,000)
