Minister Canney: Three-Year Nitrates Derogation Proposal a Vital Step for Farmers
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has said the European Commission’s proposal for a three-year extension to Ireland’s nitrates derogation is an important milestone that now requires strong support from EU Member States.
Minister Canney said the proposal, secured after intensive engagement between Government and Commissioner Jessika Roswall, offers much-needed clarity for farmers as Ireland undertakes major environmental assessments required under the Habitats Directive.
“This is a significant move by the Commission,” Minister Canney said. “A three-year extension gives Ireland the time needed to complete the scientific assessments at catchment level, while maintaining stability for farm families who depend on the derogation.”
He added that continued progress on water-quality actions will be essential: “Everyone has a role in delivering improvements. We need to keep momentum to protect both our environment and the future of sustainable agriculture.”
The proposal will now go before the EU Nitrates Committee for a crucial vote on 9 December.
