Minister Canney urges people to check passports before booking holidays
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has urged people booking holidays in the next couple of weeks to check that their passports are in date before booking flights or making travel arrangements.
Minister Canney said this time of year sees a surge in holiday bookings, with many people taking advantage of January sales or travel vouchers purchased as Christmas presents, only to discover close to departure that their passport has expired or does not meet the entry requirements for their destination.
“Every year, people are caught out because they assume their passport is still valid,” Minister Canney said. “Many only realise there is an issue just before they are due to travel, which can result in unnecessary stress, additional costs and, in some cases, cancelled holidays.”
He noted that passport validity rules vary by country, with many destinations requiring passports to be valid for several months beyond the intended return date.
“Before you book a flight, check your passport. Don’t assume it’s in date, and don’t leave it until the last minute. This is a very important step that can save a lot of hassle later. January is a peak time for travel planning. Checking your passport early and renewing in good time if necessary, will help ensure travel plans go smoothly and avoid disappointment.”
He concluded by reminding travellers to consult official guidance on passport validity requirements well in advance of travel.
