Minister Canney welcomes continued decline in mortgage arrears

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the publication of the Mortgage Arrears Review for 2025, which shows continued progress in reducing mortgage arrears among homeowners.

The review, published by the Department of Finance, shows the number of principal dwelling home mortgages in arrears continued to fall during 2025, with:

Welcoming the findings, Minister Canney said: “These figures are encouraging and show continued progress in reducing mortgage arrears and helping people remain in their homes. The fact that the proportion of mortgages in arrears for more than 90 days is now at its lowest level since 2009 is particularly significant.

“While the overall trend is positive, it is important to recognise that many households continue to face financial challenges. That is why it is vital that people engage with their lender and seek support as early as possible if they are experiencing difficulties meeting mortgage repayments.”

The review also highlights the ongoing role of Government supports for homeowners experiencing mortgage difficulties. These include Abhaile, the National Mortgage Arrears Resolution Service, which has provided advice and support to more than 34,600 people since it was established in 2015, as well as the Back on Track information service provided by the Insolvency Service of Ireland.

Minister Canney added: “Although mortgage arrears continue to decline, it is important that we remain focused on supporting those who are still struggling. Ensuring people have access to advice, information and practical supports will continue to be an important part of helping households manage financial difficulties and stay in their homes.”
