Minister Canney welcomes €1.42 million for Galway rural roads under Local Improvement Scheme
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the allocation of €1,420,380 for Galway under the 2026 Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).
The funding includes €1,170,380 for rural roads and laneways across the county, along with €250,000 ringfenced for eligible roads on Galway’s offshore islands.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “This is very significant funding for Galway’s rural communities. This investment demonstrates the continued commitment of the Government to vital road infrastructure in rural Ireland, providing access to people’s homes and farms.
“€1.42 million for Galway will allow vital improvement works to go ahead in 2026.”
The Local Improvement Scheme provides funding for non-public rural roads that are not normally maintained by local authorities. Since the scheme was reintroduced in 2017, over €201 million has been allocated nationally to improve more than 5,500 roads.
Local authorities are responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works under the scheme, in consultation with residents/landowners. Homeowners and farmers who use the lane make a small local contribution and the Government provides the balance.
Minister Canney added: “This is a practical scheme that delivers real improvements on the ground. It supports rural families, strengthens farming communities and ensures people can continue to live and work in rural Galway with safe and reliable access.”
Works funded under the 2026 allocation will be carried out during suitable weather conditions to maximise delivery this year.
