Minister Canney welcomes €186 million in Agriculture payments to Galway in 2025

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers has welcomed figures showing that over €186 million in payments were issued to Galway farmers and rural communities in 2025 by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The Galway figures form part of a national total of more than €2.18 billion paid out during 2025 to support farmers, fishers and rural and coastal communities across the State.

Payments to Galway farmers during 2025 included substantial supports under the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS), CRISS, Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC), Eco-Schemes, ACRES, the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP), forestry premiums and a wide range of livestock, welfare and capital investment schemes. Together, these payments provided a vital income stream for farm families and supported economic activity across rural Galway.

Welcoming the figures, Minister Canney said: “The payment of more than €186 million to Galway farmers in 2025 is hugely significant. These supports underpin farm family incomes across the county and play a vital role in sustaining rural communities, local businesses and the wider regional economy.”

He added: “Galway farmers are participating strongly in schemes such as ACRES, ANC, Eco-Schemes and SCEP. This demonstrates both the scale of agricultural activity in the county and the commitment of farmers to environmental sustainability, animal welfare and long-term land management.”

Minister Canney also highlighted the importance of timely payments, noting that Ireland continues to lead at EU level in issuing CAP payments early and to the widest possible group of farmers, providing certainty at a time of ongoing cost pressures in the sector.
