Minister Canney welcomes funding for parenting peer support projects in Loughrea and Gort
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed new funding for parenting peer support initiatives in Loughrea and Gort under the Supporting Parents – Parent Peer Support Fund 2026.
The funding will support organisations working directly with parents and carers to provide peer-led support, reduce isolation and strengthen family wellbeing.
In Galway East, two projects have received funding:
• Children’s Disability Network Team East Galway South Roscommon (Loughrea) – €5,000
• Gort Family Resource Centre – €2,500
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said the funding will help strengthen practical supports for families in local communities.
“Parent peer support can make a real difference for families. When parents have the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences, it can provide reassurance, practical advice and a sense of community.
“I’m particularly pleased to see projects in Loughrea and Gort supported through this fund. These organisations are doing valuable work supporting parents and carers locally, and this funding will help them continue to provide that support.”
The Parent Peer Support Fund 2026 will distribute €152,500 to 49 organisations nationwide, with grants of up to €5,000 available to help organisations establish, continue or expand peer support initiatives for parents.
Minister Canney added that initiatives like these play an important role in supporting families and strengthening communities.
“Strong supports for parents help build stronger families and stronger communities. These local initiatives provide a space where parents can share experiences, learn from one another and access support when they need it most.”
