Minister Canney welcomes launch of new Quantity Surveying Apprenticeships at ATU
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has warmly welcomed the launch of a new suite of Quantity Surveying Apprenticeships at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), describing it as an important step in addressing skills shortages while creating new opportunities for people to build rewarding careers in the construction sector.
The apprenticeships will span Levels 6, 7 and 8 and create a complete educational pathway for those seeking a career in one of Ireland’s most in-demand professions.
The new apprenticeships have been developed through a strong partnership between ATU, industry employers, professional bodies and public sector stakeholders. This collaborative approach ensures graduates leave with the practical skills, knowledge and professional readiness needed to succeed in a fast-changing construction sector.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said he was particularly pleased to see ATU continuing to expand its apprenticeship offering and strengthen links between education and industry.
“These new Quantity Surveying Apprenticeships are excellent news for students, employers and the wider construction sector. We know there is growing demand for skilled professionals as we continue to invest in housing, infrastructure and regional development projects across the country. As a former Quantity Surveyor myself, I know how important these opportunities are for students.”
“Creating flexible pathways into these careers is essential if we are to build the workforce needed for the future. Apprenticeships offer people the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications while developing practical skills in a real-world working environment. I am also a former lecturer in GMIT, now ATU and have seen first-hand the important role the university plays in developing talent, supporting regional growth and responding to the needs of industry.”
Delivered through a blended learning model, apprentices will combine workplace experience with online lectures, practical learning and structured academic support.
The introduction of a structured apprenticeship pathway from Level 6 through to Level 8 provides a clear and flexible route into the profession, enabling learners to progress to honours degree level while remaining in employment.
Minister Canney concluded: “ATU has built a strong reputation for delivering practical, industry-focused education and these new programmes are another example of how the university is helping to address real skills needs while creating opportunities for learners across the region.”
Recruitment is now underway for the first intake, with programmes scheduled to commence in September 2026.
