Minister Canney welcomes major broadband progress for Belclare with 3,700 homes to benefit

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed significant progress on the rollout of high-speed fibre broadband for the Belclare area.

A new distribution unit has now been installed at Belclare Sports Field, which will serve approximately 3,700 homes and businesses in the catchment area.

Minister Canney said this marks a major milestone for the community:

“With the distribution unit now in place, residents can expect to begin pre-ordering their connection from mid-July 2026.”

He added that this investment will improve connectivity for families, farms and small businesses across the entire catchment:

“Reliable high-speed fibre broadband to the home is essential for work, education and daily life. This rollout will make a real difference for people in the Belclare area.”

Minister Canney – who was centrally involved in the creation of the National Broadband Plan (NBP) in 2019 as Minister of State for Natural Resources, Community Affairs and Digital Development and Chair of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce, working alongside then Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton – said the rollout is making a real difference for homes, schools, farms and businesses across the country.

The National Broadband Plan, which was the biggest single capital investment in the State back in 2019, is on track to be delivered on time and within its €2.9 billion budget.
