Minister Canney welcomes opening of Animal Welfare Grants Programme 2026
Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the opening of applications for the Animal Welfare Grants Programme 2026.
The scheme will provide funding to registered animal welfare charities to support their day-to-day work caring for animals, delivering welfare services, and promoting responsible ownership.
Minister Canney said: “I see first-hand the work animal welfare groups do in communities right across the country. It’s often done quietly, but it makes a real difference.
“This funding helps support that work in a practical way – whether that’s caring for animals, responding to emergencies, or educating people about responsible pet ownership.”
Last year, over €6 million was distributed to 94 charities, with grants ranging from €4,000 to over €2.6 million.
Applications are now open, with a two-stage process:
• Form A – initial eligibility application
• Form B – detailed application for shortlisted organisations
Minister Canney added: “I’d really encourage any eligible organisation to take a look at this and apply. These groups play a vital role, and it’s important they are supported to continue their work.”
