Minister Seán Canney Launches Ireland’s First Emergency Solar Eco Cabinet on the M4
Ireland’s first Emergency Solar Eco Powered Cabinet was officially launched on Monday, April 28th at the M4 Applegreen Service Station (Westbound, Enfield) by Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports and Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers, Seán Canney TD.
The groundbreaking initiative, developed in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Applegreen, and Eco Powered Cabinets, introduces a 100% eco-friendly, emission-free emergency cabinet designed specifically for motorway use. Powered entirely by solar energy, the unit offers round-the-clock access to lifesaving equipment including fire extinguishers, trauma kits, windscreen breakers, defibrillators, and cardiac medication.
Speaking at the event, Minister Canney praised the collaboration and innovation behind the project: “This is a practical, forward-thinking development that combines sustainability with public safety. It ensures that vital emergency tools are available 24/7 for anyone travelling our roads. By embracing green technologies like this, we are creating a safer, smarter and more sustainable transport network for all. I want to congratulate Darren Forde of Eco Powered Cabinets and all the associated bodies for their foresight in bringing this project to fruition.”
Located along one of Ireland’s busiest motorway routes—with an Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) of nearly 29,000 vehicles—the cabinet will serve over 31.6 million road users annually, in addition to the local population. Its installation marks a major step forward in emergency preparedness on Irish roads and reflects a broader commitment to low-emission solutions in national infrastructure.
The event highlighted how innovation and partnership between public agencies and the private sector can deliver real, tangible benefits to motorists and communities alike.
