Minister Seán Canney Welcomes €3.83 Million Investment for Galway Schools
Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, Seán Canney TD, has welcomed the announcement of over €3.8 million for primary and post-primary schools across County Galway as part of a national €65 million funding package for schools.
The investment includes:
€2.03 million in ICT infrastructure funding to enhance digital learning
€1.8 million in Minor Works Grants to support small-scale building improvements and essential maintenance in primary and special schools
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “I am delighted to confirm that Galway schools will benefit from a combined €3.83 million in direct government investment. This will allow our schools to carry out critical maintenance and upgrade works, while also ensuring they have the technology and digital infrastructure required to support 21st-century learning.”
The €2.03 million in ICT funding will help Galway schools invest in digital devices, teaching platforms, and software to enhance how students learn and teachers deliver lessons. It forms part of the third tranche of ICT grants under the Government’s Digital Strategy for Schools to 2027.
Meanwhile, the €1.8 million in Minor Works Grants will support immediate improvements to buildings, grounds, heating, ventilation, furniture, and classroom equipment in Galway’s primary and special schools.
Minister Canney continued: “This dual investment is about future-proofing our education system. It’s about ensuring every child in Galway has access to a safe, welcoming learning environment with the tools and technologies they need to thrive. Schools are the heart of our communities, and this funding reflects our commitment to supporting their growth.”
The ICT grant includes a €2,000 base payment per school, plus a per-pupil allocation, with additional supports for DEIS and special education settings. The Minor Works Grant provides a €5,500 base payment, with additional funding per pupil.
Minister Canney concluded: “This is a strong statement of support for education in Galway.”
