Minister Seán Canney Welcomes €30 Million Boost and Extension of First Home Scheme to 2027

Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, Seán Canney TD, has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, that the First Home Scheme will be extended to June 2027, with an additional €30 million in Government funding.

The First Home Scheme is a shared equity initiative that supports eligible first-time buyers and self-builders in bridging the gap between their deposit, mortgage, and the purchase price of a new home. The scheme has already enabled thousands of individuals and families to take their first step on the property ladder.

Speaking today, Minister Canney said: “This is a timely and important boost to one of our key housing supports. The First Home Scheme has already proven its impact in helping more than 6,700 people access homeownership, and I’m delighted that the Government is extending it to 2027 and committing an extra €30 million to make sure even more people can benefit.”

“This is about ensuring people, including young couples and individuals in rural towns and villages, have access to a permanent home of their own. The extension provides vital certainty for buyers and for the housing sector. It is a clear example of this Government’s determination to support affordable home ownership across the country.”

Minister Canney also welcomed the increase in uptake of the scheme in Q1 2025, with applications up 49% and approvals up 51% compared to the previous quarter.

The latest announcement brings the total State commitment to the scheme to €370 million, matched by participating banks, bringing the full funding envelope to €740 million. The scheme is available to eligible first-time buyers and those making a fresh start who have mortgage approval with a participating lender.
