Minister Seán Canney Welcomes ESB Networks Forestry and Vegetation Clearing Works to Strengthen Resilience Post-Storm Éowyn

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the comprehensive forestry, timber and vegetation clearing programme being undertaken by ESB Networks in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.

The works, scheduled across several counties over the coming months, will identify and remove high-risk timber and vegetation that could threaten the electricity network during future extreme weather events. This approach aims to safeguard electricity infrastructure, protect public safety and ensure a more stable and resilient supply for thousands of customers.

Minister Canney said: “Storm Éowyn was a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in our energy network when extreme weather strikes. The programme of forestry and vegetation clearance now being undertaken by ESB Networks is not just about repairing the damage caused, but about building long-term resilience into the system. By taking precautionary measures today, we are future-proofing our network, reducing risks to public safety, and ensuring communities can continue to rely on a secure energy supply into the future.”

ESB Networks has confirmed that post-storm drone and foot patrols identified vegetation and forestry at risk of impacting power lines. The clearing works will be delivered in partnership with landowners to minimise disruption, while addressing threats before they cause outages.

The programme will be carried out in the counties of Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath, Donegal, Cavan and Clare.

Minister Canney added: “Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and it is vital that we continue to learn from the storms that have occurred and ensure we are more resilient and adaptable to future events. Strengthening the resilience of our national grid is essential for our homes, our businesses and our economy.”
