Minister Seán Canney Welcomes Free Admission for Under-18s at Local Heritage Sites This August

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the announcement that children under 18 will enjoy free admission to OPW heritage sites across the country this August — including several important sites in Galway.

The initiative, which runs from August 1st to 31st, aims to encourage young people and families to explore Ireland’s rich history through accessible and affordable visits. The pilot applies to all fee-paying OPW heritage sites — with the exception of Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne — and will run from August 1st to August 31st, 2025. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Minister Canney highlighted four key heritage sites in his constituency:

“These are treasured places that bring our history to life,” Minister Canney said. “This initiative offers a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy affordable and meaningful days out this summer. I commend Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and the OPW for making it happen.”
