Minister Seán Canney Welcomes Important Milestone on Bridge Street, Dunmore but Urges Delivery Without Delay

Seán Canney TD, Independent Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation that Galway County Council will now proceed to Part 8 planning for long-awaited works in Dunmore village, including Bridge Street, Barrack Street, High Street and Castle Street.

Minister Canney said this marks an important milestone in progressing long-overdue improvements to Bridge Street, but added that the community has experienced setbacks and delays which he hopes will now finally be addressed.

“Back in 2019, as Minister of State for Rural Affairs, I allocated €600,000 to acquire properties and widen Bridge Street. In the time since, little visible progress has been made. Buildings have continued to deteriorate, the street has remained dangerously narrow, and residents, school children and road users have been left at risk every day,” Minister Canney said.

“I have consistently warned that Bridge Street is simply not fit for purpose, and that the stop-go system is not a real solution. The fact that we are now moving to the Part 8 planning stage is welcome, but what matters most is that we deliver the project.”

The Part 8 planning process will be advertised from 29th August to 26th September 2025, with full details available at the Council’s Planning Office, the Tuam Area Office, and online at https://consult.galway.ie/. Submissions can be made until 4pm on 10th October 2025.

“This process gives the public and local community a chance to have their say, and I encourage people to engage with it. But once it is complete, there must be no further setbacks. The people of Dunmore deserve a safe, modern street, and I will continue to work with Galway County Council and TII to ensure this project is delivered,” Minister Canney concluded.
