The tender for the construction of the new €2.5 million Intreo Centre in Tuam has been issued.
This is very welcome news. The new Intreo Centre on the site of the Old Library in Shop Street is part of the regeneration plan for Tuam Town Centre.
It will bring together all social welfare services and the refurbishment of the Old Library will effectively open up a new public building in the centre of Tuam.
Contractors for the tender have been pre-qualified and all leases and legal issues have been resolved. I expect construction to begin during the second quarter of this year.
I advanced this project when I was Minister of State in the Office of Public Works and have held discussions with OPW officials on a number of occasions since to ensure that it progresses.
There were delays around previous planning permission but planning permission was approved early last year and I now look forward to the building’s completion.
