I have received confirmation that Waterways Ireland will be opening the new boardwalk across the River Shannon tomorrow to the public.
“The Boardwalk across the Weir at Meelick linking Galway and Offaly represents a €2.5 million investment in recreational infrastructure in East Galway”
The boardwalk is located close to Martello Tower and historic Victoria Lock which has also been opened up with a footpath along the riverbank from the boardwalk to the town.
“This project has been completed by Irish Water with the support of National Parks & Wildlife and Fáilte Ireland and the OPW. The boardwalk project has been a labour of love for the local committee led by Charlie Killeen. I was delighted to have been in a position to assist in the delivery of this very important project for Meelick”.
The boardwalk is a unique recreational and tourism attraction linking counties Offaly and Galway across the River Shannon.
“I am delighted that the facility is open to the public prior to Christmas and it will provide a positive reaction in these difficult times”.
