Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the Government’s decision to hold the 2026 National Famine Commemoration at Portumna Workhouse, Co. Galway.
Minister Canney said the announcement is a major recognition for Portumna and the wider Galway area: “I am very pleased that Portumna Workhouse has been selected to host the National Famine Commemoration in 2026. This is a solemn national event, and Portumna is an historically significant location with deep links to the story of An Gorta Mór. I want to commend Galway County Council for their strong submission, which has secured the Commemoration for Galway for the first time.”
The commemoration, held annually on the third Sunday of May, consists of cultural elements from the local community and a State ceremony including military honours and wreath-laying.
Minister Canney said hosting the event in Portumna is both fitting and important: “Portumna Workhouse stands as a powerful reminder of the hardship faced by families and communities during the Famine. Having the national commemoration here ensures that this history is honoured appropriately and that our region plays a central role in remembering those who suffered.”
