Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the signing of the contract this morning for the R332 Kilbannon Road Realignment Scheme in Tuam, marking a major step towards construction of the long-awaited project.

The signing of the contract clears the way for works to commence in the first quarter of 2026.

Minister Canney said the milestone represents significant progress on a scheme that was first proposed approximately seven years ago and has been the subject of sustained local engagement.

“I am delighted that contracts were signed this morning for the R332 Kilbannon Road Realignment,” Minister Canney said.

“This is a project that local people have waited a long time to see delivered, and today’s signing is an important step in turning years of planning into construction on the ground.”

Funding for the project has been allocated in 2026, enabling the scheme to proceed to the construction phase as planned.

The works will deliver a major safety and accessibility upgrade along the R332, including road realignment from Kilbannon village towards the GAA pitch, along with a new footpath and cycleway linking St Benin’s National School.

“This investment will significantly improve safety for all road users,” Minister Canney added.

“The realignment and the new walking and cycling link between the school, the village and the GAA club will make a real difference for families and the wider community, and it reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to improving rural roads and active travel infrastructure across Galway.”
