Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the continued roll-out of the National Federation of Group Water Schemes (NFGWS) Drinking Water Refill Station Project, with six stations delivered across Galway East.
The initiative, supported through the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment’s Circular Economy Fund, is helping rural communities reduce single-use plastics while improving public access to safe, high-quality drinking water.
Minister Canney said: “This is a practical, community-driven project that delivers real environmental benefits at local level. By providing free, accessible drinking water in our towns and villages, we are making it easier for people to choose reusable bottles and reduce plastic waste.
I am particularly pleased to see strong uptake across Galway East, where our group water schemes continue to lead by example in sustainability, source protection and community engagement.”
A total of 43 refill stations have now been installed nationwide under the NFGWS-led initiative, building on earlier pilot schemes and bringing the overall number of refill stations on group water schemes to 80.
Galway Refill Stations Installed in 2025:
- Ardrahan Group Water Scheme Co-operative Society Ltd
- Ballinabanaba Group Water Scheme
- Barnaderg Gortbeg Group Water Scheme
- Cappataggle & District Group Water Scheme
- Kilconieron Group Water Scheme
- Kilcoona Caherlistrane Group Water Scheme
Minister Canney said these installations reflect the strength of community-led infrastructure across Galway East: “Group Water Schemes are at the heart of rural Ireland. They are owned and run by the communities they serve, and this project demonstrates once again their capacity to innovate and to contribute meaningfully to Ireland’s green transition. Importantly, the refill stations also support schools and young people through education initiatives that promote water conservation and climate awareness.”
