Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the opening of Year 4 of the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) to new entrants.
The scheme, which is part of a €100 million, five-year programme, supports sheep farmers to take practical steps to improve flock welfare, while also providing important financial support to the sector.
Farmers participating in the scheme can receive up to €12 per breeding ewe each year. When combined with the National Sheep Welfare Scheme, total supports can reach up to €25 per ewe in 2026.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “This is a really positive opportunity for sheep farmers, particularly for those who may not yet be part of the scheme.
“Sheep farming is a vital part of our rural economy, especially in the west of Ireland, and schemes like this provide both recognition and real support for the work farmers are doing every day.
“The combination of supports now available will make a real difference on farms – helping to improve animal welfare while also supporting farm incomes at a time when costs remain a real concern.”
Applications for the scheme open from 25th March, and will remain open until 29th April at 11:59pm. Farmers must apply online through agfood.ie.
