Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the payment of the annual Carer’s Support Grant to 7,386 carers across Galway this week.
The grant, which stands at €2,000 for each person being cared for, will be paid to eligible carers on Thursday, 4 June. Nationally, more than 147,000 carers will benefit from the payment, with a total of €336 million being issued by the Department of Social Protection.
Welcoming the payment, Minister Canney said carers provide an invaluable service to families and communities across Galway and throughout the country.
“Carers make an extraordinary contribution every day, supporting loved ones, helping them to remain in their homes and communities, and providing care that often goes unseen but is absolutely vital.
“This payment is an important recognition of the dedication, compassion and commitment shown by carers across Galway. I am delighted that 7,386 carers in the county will benefit from the Carer’s Support Grant this week.
“Caring for a family member or loved one can bring significant responsibilities and challenges. While no payment can fully reflect the value of the work carers do, this support is an acknowledgement of their contribution and the central role they play in our society.”
Minister Canney noted that the Carer’s Support Grant is paid automatically to people receiving Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance. It is also available to other full-time carers who meet the qualifying conditions.
He added: “Many families rely on the care provided by relatives and loved ones every day. Their dedication allows older people and people with disabilities to continue living with dignity and independence in their own communities. I want to thank every carer in Galway for the remarkable work they do and for the difference they make to so many lives.”
