Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed Government approval of legislation that will underpin a €105 million investment in the Post Office Network and help secure the future of post offices in communities across Ireland.

The Postal and Telecommunications Services (Amendment) Bill 2026 will increase the statutory funding ceiling for maintaining the Post Office Network from €30 million to €105 million, enabling the delivery of the Government’s commitment to provide €15 million per year in support funding between 2026 and 2030.

Welcoming the legislation, Minister Canney said: “Post offices remain at the heart of communities right across rural Ireland. They provide essential services and support local businesses.

“This legislation is about securing the future of our post office network. By increasing the funding ceiling to €105 million, the Government is providing the framework needed to support post offices over the coming years and ensure they can continue serving communities.”

Minister Canney said the investment recognises the vital role played by postmasters and post offices, particularly in rural and isolated areas.

“Many people continue to rely on their local post office for everyday services and face-to-face support that cannot always be replaced online. This funding will help provide stability and certainty for postmasters while supporting the continued development and modernisation of the network.

The legislation will now proceed through the Oireachtas and will provide the legal basis for the Government’s previously announced Post Office Network Funding Scheme, which will provide €15 million annually from 2026 to 2030.

Minister Canney said the measure will help ensure post offices remain a strong and sustainable part of community life across Ireland.
