Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the approval of all 24 applications submitted from Galway under the 2026 Childminding Development Grant Scheme.

The announcement forms part of a record national investment of more than €422,000, with 424 childminders set to benefit from the scheme this year. This represents both the largest amount of funding and the highest number of recipients ever supported under the programme.

The Childminding Development Grant supports childminders to purchase toys, childcare equipment, safety equipment, inclusion equipment and materials related to the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The funding is designed to help childminders further enhance the quality and safety of the services they provide for children and families.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “Childminders are an integral part of our early learning and childcare sector, providing essential support to children, families and communities across Galway.”

“I am delighted that all 24 applications submitted from Galway have been approved, securing €23,600 in funding for local childminders. This investment will help childminders purchase equipment and resources that will further enhance the quality, safety and inclusivity of the services they provide.”

The grants were open to all childminders, including those planning to establish a childminding business in 2026. Seventy-five per cent of the grant is paid in advance to help with the upfront costs of purchasing equipment and resources.

Successful applicants will receive information about their grant awards over the coming days.

The funding also supports childminders as they engage with the registration process introduced under new childminding regulations, helping to strengthen the sector while providing additional supports and assurances for families.
