Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, is encouraging farmers to complete a fodder budget as ongoing dry weather continues to impact grass growth across the country.

The prolonged dry weather has resulted in significant grass growth challenges, particularly in the eastern half of the country. While there is currently no shortage of fodder, farmers are being encouraged to assess their individual position and plan ahead to ensure sufficient stocks for the coming winter.

Minister Canney said: “The ongoing dry weather is having a significant impact on grass growth in many parts of the country. While there is no shortage of fodder at present, it is important that farmers assess their own position now and ensure they have sufficient fodder stocks for the winter ahead.

“I would encourage all farmers to complete a fodder budget by 21 August. These individual budgets will also inform the Teagasc National Fodder Survey, which will provide an assessment of the overall national and regional fodder supply situation and help inform any next steps that may be required.”

Teagasc has commenced data collection for the National Fodder Survey, with results expected later this month. Once the results are available, consideration will be given to any necessary next steps, including the possible reconvening of the National Fodder and Food Security Committee.

In the meantime, Teagasc is advising livestock farmers to continue measuring grass supply and growth rates weekly and to consider both current pasture supply and winter feed stocks when making decisions around supplementation.
