Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed €3.75 million in funding for two regeneration projects in Tuam under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.
The funding includes €3.6 million for the Shambles Outdoor Market and Event Space, alongside €150,000 for the Station Quarter Tuam project.
Minister Canney also highlighted two projects in the County Galway Metropolitan Area at Oranmore Train Station, with €150,000 for the preliminary design of vehicular accesses from the R446 into the Garraun Urban Framework Plan lands north of the railway line, and €800,000 for the planning and construction of a designed Eco Park within the Garraun Urban Framework Plan area at Oranmore Train Station.
Minister Canney said: “The €3.6 million allocation for the Shambles Outdoor Market and Event Space is a very significant investment in the heart of Tuam and will support the development of an important town-centre space for markets, events and the wider community.
“I am also very pleased to see €150,000 provided for the Station Quarter Tuam project. Together, these projects represent an investment of €3.75 million in the future development and regeneration of Tuam.
“The two projects in the County Galway Metropolitan Area are also important investments in the future development of Oranmore. The funding will support the preliminary design of vehicular access to the Garraun Urban Framework Plan lands north of the railway line at Oranmore Train Station, as well as the planning and construction of an Eco Park within the wider framework plan area.”
“I also welcome the significant investment in Ballinasloe, with funding for the St Michael’s Square Public Realm Enhancement and the development of a masterplan for Ballinasloe Fair Green.
“These investments provide an opportunity to improve our town centres, public spaces and infrastructure and to support the development of communities across Galway in the years ahead.”
The Galway projects form part of almost 120 projects across every local authority in the State included in the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.
A total investment of €409 million will be available nationally where local authorities meet the targets set out in their applications.
The new fund replaces the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and will continue to support urban regeneration projects and the development of sustainable communities.
Projects supported under the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund fall into two categories.
Category 1A projects will support longer-term projects that will be delivered in the later years of the National Development Plan, while Category 1B focuses on projects that can be delivered in the short term, with up to €9 million available in shared funding for projects that can be on-site by September 2027.
