Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed an update from the HSE confirming that it is working to have reimbursement of Skyclarys under the High Tech arrangements in place from 1 October 2026.

The HSE Senior Management Team approved Skyclarys for reimbursement on 25 August 2026. Since then, the HSE has been progressing the administrative and logistical arrangements needed to enable reimbursement as soon as possible.

Biogen, the product supplier, has confirmed that it expects to have commercial stock available in Ireland from late September.

Minister Canney said: “This is an important update for people with Friedreich’s ataxia and their families who have been waiting for access to this treatment.

“The HSE is working to have reimbursement arrangements in place from 1 October, and I hope the remaining processes can now be completed as quickly as possible.”

Reimbursement will be in line with the approved European Medicines Agency market authorisation and will be subject to prescription under the supervision of a specialist with experience of treating patients with Friedreich’s ataxia.

Prescriptions will be processed through the HSE High Tech Hub. The HSE is currently working through the processes required to enable relevant specialists to register with the Hub so their prescriptions can be processed.
