Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the inclusion of an Ability West children’s respite facility in Tuam among 12 disability infrastructure projects, with a combined estimated value of over €8 million, which the HSE is working towards including in its 2026/2027 Capital Plan.

The project at 9 Cedar Court, Galway Road, Tuam, will involve the construction of a single-storey extension and renovation of the existing property. The new extension will accommodate two self-contained apartments.

The Tuam project is one of 12 well-developed projects across the country identified following a call for capital projects from disability service providers earlier this year.

The projects form part of a wider €9.5 million investment in disability infrastructure announced by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley and Minister of State with responsibility for Disability Emer Higgins.

A further three projects in Clare and Limerick, with a combined estimated value of €1.5 million, have been assessed as shovel-ready.

Minister Canney said: “This is very welcome news for Ability West and, most importantly, for the children and families who depend on its services.

“Respite services provide vital support to families, and it is important that the facilities available to them are comfortable, accessible and suited to their needs.

“The proposed extension and renovations at Cedar Court will provide two self-contained apartments and improve the facilities available for children’s respite services in Tuam.

“I want to acknowledge the excellent work carried out by Ability West in supporting people with disabilities and their families across Galway. This project will help strengthen those services in our community.”

The investment forms part of the Government’s commitment to improving disability infrastructure, with €278 million earmarked for HSE disability capital projects under the National Development Plan up to 2030.

All projects remain subject to meeting the HSE’s capital approval requirements.
