Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that construction on the Mountbellew and Ballygar Wastewater Treatment Plant projects is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The two projects represent a combined investment of almost €40 million in essential wastewater infrastructure and are among a number of improvements highlighted in Uisce Éireann’s latest update on investment in Galway.

Minister Canney, who has been engaging directly with Uisce Éireann on both schemes, said the projects are essential for the future development of the two towns.

“These are two very important projects for Mountbellew and Ballygar, and I am pleased to see both moving towards construction with the appointment of a contractor.

“Modern wastewater infrastructure is essential for any growing community. These upgrades will improve services, protect the local environment and provide the capacity needed to support housing, businesses and future development.

“Both communities have been waiting for these improvements for some time, and I have been keeping in regular contact with Uisce Éireann to ensure the projects continue to progress.”

The Ballygar project will upgrade the existing wastewater treatment plant, increasing capacity to meet current demand and support future growth. In Mountbellew, the project involves the development of a new wastewater treatment plant.

Minister Canney added: “People in Mountbellew and Ballygar want to see these projects delivered. I will continue to engage with Uisce Éireann and keep a close eye on progress as both schemes move towards construction.”

The update comes as Uisce Éireann confirmed investment of €454 million in wastewater services nationally during 2025, with 93% of wastewater treatment plants now compliant with EU standards.
