Minister Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has commented following today’s High Court decision to dismiss the legal actions taken by Sinn Féin and People Before Profit TDs in relation to the attendance of so-called super-junior Ministers at Cabinet.
Minister Canney, who is one of the Ministers of State directly affected by the proceedings, said the outcome was clear and should prompt reflection on how political disagreements are pursued.
“I note that the High Court has dismissed these cases,” Minister Canney said. “I am astounded that Sinn Féin and People Before Profit would seek, through this action, to remove Ministers with responsibility for Mental Health and Disability from the Cabinet table.”
He said these portfolios require strong, informed and consistent representation at the highest level of Government. “Mental health and disability services affect some of the most vulnerable people in our society.”
Minister Canney said the case also represented an unnecessary waste of court time.
“Our courts exist to deal with serious legal matters. Using the High Court to pursue what is, at its core, a political disagreement diverts time and resources away from cases where people are waiting for justice on issues that directly affect their lives.”
He said his focus would remain on delivery of the Programme for Government.
“My priority continues to be effective delivery across my areas of responsibility and constructive engagement at Cabinet in the interests of the people we serve.”
