Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that upgrade works at the Mountbellew and Ballygar Wastewater Treatment Plants are now scheduled to commence in Quarter 3 of 2026.

The update follows direct engagement by Minister Canney with Uisce Éireann, who confirmed in writing that both projects will proceed on the same timeline for delivery.

Welcoming the confirmation, Minister Canney said: “This is a really important update for both Mountbellew and Ballygar. These projects have been a priority for some time, and it’s encouraging to now have a clear and aligned timeline for construction to begin in Q3 2026.

“These schemes represent a significant investment in essential infrastructure in east Galway. Modern wastewater treatment is critical not just for protecting the environment, but for supporting housing, business development and the future growth of both communities.”

The projects, with a combined investment of almost €40 million, have been progressing through planning and procurement stages, with both now moving towards delivery.

Minister Canney added: “I have been engaging consistently with Uisce Éireann to keep these projects moving, and I will continue to do so to ensure there are no unnecessary delays.

“People in Mountbellew and Ballygar need to see progress on the ground, and today’s update gives that reassurance that we are moving closer to delivery. It is also an important development for Mountbellew, given the introduction of the new Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery course being delivered through Mountbellew Agricultural College and ATU.”

He concluded: “These upgrades will make a real difference locally – improving services, enabling development and ensuring both areas are properly equipped for the future.”
