Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the allocation of over €1.7 million to 1,792 Galway farmers as part of the latest payments under the Sheep Improvement Scheme.
Minister Canney said the funding represents an important injection of support for sheep farmers across Galway, noting the county’s strong participation in the scheme and the value of these payments to farm families. Total funding of €1,737,427 will issue to 1,792 Galway farmers.
“This is a substantial and very welcome payment for nearly 1,800 Galway farmers,” Minister Canney said. “Sheep farming is a core part of our agricultural economy, particularly in East Galway and our upland areas. The Sheep Improvement Scheme provides vital backing for animal health and welfare and helps strengthen income stability for sheep farmers.”
Nationally, almost €17 million is now issuing to 15,527 participants at an 85% advance rate. Minister Canney highlighted that farmers will receive €23.50 per ewe in 2025 when the Sheep Improvement Scheme and National Sheep Welfare Scheme payments are combined.
He also encouraged any Galway farmers with outstanding queries from the Department to respond promptly so payments can continue to issue without delay.
