Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed today’s announcement of over €19.3 million in funding for the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) for the 2025/26 academic year.
The allocation, which is an increase of more than €260,000 on last year, includes €9.1 million in core funding and €10.2 million in additional targeted support for students experiencing financial pressures.
Minister Canney said the investment will make a real difference to students: “This funding is a very important support for students who are struggling to manage the costs of attending college. Too many young people still face financial barriers that threaten their ability to stay in higher education. The Student Assistance Fund provides help with essentials such as books and class materials, rent and other utility costs, food, essential travel, childcare and medical costs. I strongly encourage any student experiencing financial pressure to contact their college’s Access Office and see what support is available.”
The SAF is available to full-time and part-time students and can assist with both temporary and ongoing financial difficulties.
Minister Canney added: “Ensuring that students can remain in education is vital for their future and for the future of our regions. This support is welcome and will support the students who need it most.”
