Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed €190,000 in funding for Galway sports clubs under the Healthy Ireland Walking Tracks initiative, which will see 35 IRFU and FAI clubs nationwide share in a €900,000 investment.
The funding is part of the second phase of the Healthy Ireland IRFU and FAI Walking Tracks programme.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney highlighted the benefits for clubs within Galway East, including Loughrea Rugby and Recreational Club (€35,000), Tuam Celtic AFC (€25,000) and Moyne Villa FC (€25,000).
“These clubs play a vital role as community hubs, providing safe and accessible spaces for people of all ages to stay active,” Minister Canney said. “This funding will support practical upgrades such as improved lighting and enhanced accessibility, making walking tracks more usable throughout the year, particularly during the winter months.”
He noted that in total, seven Galway clubs have been awarded funding under the scheme, reflecting the strong level of community participation and engagement across the county.
The Healthy Ireland Walking Tracks initiative supports the upgrading of existing pitch-side walking tracks, helping to improve access for people with mobility issues and encouraging greater levels of physical activity, particularly in rural and suburban areas where alternative walking routes may be limited.
