Seán Canney TD, Minister of State and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the launch of the 2026 Childminding Development Grant, describing it as an important support for childminders and families and a clear step forward in delivering Programme for Government commitments on childcare.
The grant provides up to €1,000 per childminder to support those providing services in their own homes. It is open to registered childminders, those not yet registered with Tusla, and individuals planning to establish a childminding service in 2026.
The scheme supports investment in toys, childcare and safety equipment, inclusion resources, STEM and arts materials, and IT equipment to assist with training and registration processes. A total budget of €500,000 has been allocated for 2026, reflecting strong demand in previous years.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “Childminders play a vital role in supporting families, particularly in local communities where flexible and home-based childcare is essential. This grant provides practical, targeted support to help childminders enhance quality, safety and inclusion in their services.”
Minister Canney said the scheme aligns directly with the Programme for Government commitment to improving childcare affordability, quality and capacity, and to advancing the professionalisation of the sector, including examination of a professional register for childminders and early years educators.
“The Programme for Government is clear that we must strengthen the early learning and childcare system. Supporting childminders during this transition period is central to that ambition, ensuring high standards while recognising the professionalism of the work they do.”
The grant operates alongside the three-year transition period to September 2027, during which childminders are encouraged and supported to register with Tusla, though registration is not yet mandatory.
Applications for the 2026 Childminding Development Grant open on 11 February 2026 and close on 15 April 2026.
