Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the announcement of almost €27 million in national funding under Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme – including more than €1.2 million for Galway communities.

Under the allocations announced today, Galway County Council will receive €762,000 and Galway City Council €446,000 to work directly with community groups on practical, local projects that support Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Minister Canney said the investment represents an important boost for local climate action across both rural and urban Galway: “Communities in every corner of Galway are showing leadership on climate and energy – from renewable energy projects to local recycling, active travel, and biodiversity initiatives. This new round of funding gives Galway County and City Councils the resources to work hand-in-hand with local groups to deliver practical solutions that make a real difference, whether that’s improving energy efficiency, cutting waste, or encouraging more sustainable transport and food choices.”

The Community Climate Action Programme is designed to empower local communities to take climate action “by learning and doing”, working in partnership with their local authorities. Projects can address one or more of five themes:

  • Community energy
  • Travel
  • Food and waste
  • Shopping and recycling
  • Local climate and environmental action

Each local authority will deliver the programme through its Community Climate Action Officer, who will guide and support community groups interested in developing projects under these themes.

Minister Canney added: “I would encourage local groups across Galway to contact their Community Climate Action Officer and explore how they can get involved in shaping a lower-carbon future for our county and city.”
