The Galway East allocation forms part of a wider €320,453.47 investment across County Galway, with €204,469 awarded under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and a further €115,984.47 allocated for historic thatched buildings, supporting the conservation of protected structures and vernacular heritage across the county.
Minister Canney said the funding reflects the importance of sustained investment in buildings that are central to the identity, character and vitality of Galway’s towns, villages and rural communities.
Under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, seven Galway East projects will receive a combined €107,000 to support essential conservation works:
- Bishop Street, Tuam – window repairs (€10,000)
- Victorian residential dwelling, Circular Road, Tuam – roof repairs (€10,000)
- Crumlin Park House, Ballyglunin – metalwork conservation (€15,000)
- St Colman’s Church, Ballyranagan, Kinvara – limeworks and gutter repairs (€30,000)
- Ballymore Castle, Laurencetown, Ballinasloe – masonry repairs (€15,000)
- St Thomas’s Former Church of Ireland, Kiltormer, Ballinasloe – masonry and timber repairs (€12,000)
- Coach House, High Street, Headford – masonry repairs (€15,000)
A further €101,984.47 has been allocated to seven thatched buildings in Galway East under the Historic Thatched Buildings stream, supporting the preservation of traditional thatching skills and Ireland’s vernacular architectural heritage:
- Bunnatubber, Corrandulla – thatch works (€17,000)
- Baranna, Corrandulla – thatch works (€20,000)
- Lisheenoran, Corrandulla – thatch works (€11,808)
- Killeenaran, Kilcolgan – thatch works (€13,176.47)
- Killeeneen, Craughwell – thatch works (€20,000)
- Gortnastiel, Gort – thatch works (€15,000)
- Abbeyview House, Cordarragh, Headford – thatch works (€5,000)
Welcoming the allocations, Minister Canney said the projects demonstrate how targeted heritage investment can protect historic buildings while also supporting local employment and specialist conservation skills.
“These buildings are an important part of everyday life in Galway. This funding will help ensure they are properly maintained and remain part of our living communities for generations to come,” Minister Canney said.
