Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the allocation of over €5.6 million in projected funding for housing adaptation grants in Galway County in 2026.

The funding, which will be administered by Galway County Council, will support grants that help older people and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue living independently in their communities.

Under the allocation announced by the Department of Housing, Galway County Council will receive €4,774,187 in Exchequer funding, which together with a projected local authority contribution of €842,504 brings the total projected funding for Galway County to €5,616,691 this year.

Welcoming the allocation, Minister Canney said the funding will make a meaningful difference to households across Galway.

“This funding will support many households across Galway County who need practical adaptations carried out in their homes. For older people and people with disabilities, improvements such as accessible bathrooms, stairlifts or mobility aids can make a huge difference to daily life.

“Being able to remain living independently at home, close to family, neighbours and the community you know, is something that matters greatly to people. These grants help make that possible.”

Minister Canney said the programme also supports local employment.

“These works are typically carried out by local builders and tradespeople, so as well as improving people’s homes, the scheme also supports local jobs and economic activity across Galway.”

In addition to the Galway County allocation, Galway City Council will receive €2,119,178 in Exchequer funding, together with a projected local authority contribution of €373,973, bringing the total projected funding for the city to €2,493,151 this year.

The funding forms part of a national allocation of €129.5 million in Exchequer funding for Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People, which will rise to over €152 million when local authority contributions are included. The funding is expected to support around 17,000 grant claims nationwide in 2026.

The Housing Adaptation Grants programme provides funding to assist older people and people with disabilities in adapting their homes to better suit their needs. Grants of up to €40,000 are available for housing adaptations for people with disabilities, while grants of up to €10,700 are available for necessary repairs or improvements for older people, along with mobility aid grants of up to €8,000.
