Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, has welcomed the granting of planning permission for a new railway station at Moyross, County Limerick – a key project in the expansion of Ireland’s sustainable rail infrastructure.
Iarnród Éireann has received approval from Limerick City and County Council to construct the new station, which will be located at the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre. The development will serve the civic heart of Moyross and provide new public transport connections for the area’s growing population.
Funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority (NTA), the project forms part of the Department’s Pathfinder Programme, which showcases exemplar sustainable mobility projects being delivered across the country.
Minister Canney said the Moyross station is another important step in expanding Ireland’s regional rail network: “The granting of planning permission for Moyross station represents the latest positive development in a series of rail projects progressing across the network. This station will broaden access to public transport in the Limerick area, support regeneration, and help deliver the vision of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review – a modern, connected and sustainable rail system serving communities right across the country.”
Located on the existing Limerick-Galway rail line, the new Moyross station will link residents to Limerick city centre, Galway, Cork, Dublin and beyond. It will also provide access to major local amenities including Thomond Park, the TUS Gaelic Grounds, and Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).
The project will integrate with Limerick City and County Council’s proposed University Avenue scheme, BusConnects Limerick, and the Limerick CycleConnects Network, supporting multi-modal and sustainable transport choices.
Once funding confirmation is in place, the project will move to tender preparation, with construction expected to commence in 2026 and take approximately 15 months to complete.
