Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, Seán Canney TD has welcomed the ongoing review of planning permission exemptions, describing it as an important opportunity to unlock more flexible and practical housing solutions.

The review, being led by Minister for Housing James Browne TD, forms part of the wider implementation of the Planning and Development Act 2024 and will shortly go to public consultation.

Minister Canney said: “This is a chance to make our planning system more responsive to the real needs of families, older people, and communities. By expanding planning exemptions in a sensible and considered way, we can create more options for people to live where and how they choose.”

He added: “There is a clear commitment in the Programme for Government to support positive ageing and more practical living arrangements. This review is a step in that direction, and I believe it has the potential to ease pressure on the housing system while helping people adapt their homes to suit changing needs.”

Minister Canney encouraged widespread participation in the upcoming consultation: “I would strongly urge individuals, community groups, public representatives and professionals in housing and planning to make their voices heard. With proper safeguards in place, these reforms can make our planning system more efficient, more responsive, and better aligned with the everyday needs of families, older people, and those seeking affordable housing solutions.”
