Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, Seán Canney TD, is encouraging individuals and communities across Ireland to take part in ‘Go Purple Day’ on Friday, 30 May 2025 — a national awareness initiative coordinated by An Garda Síochána in collaboration with domestic abuse support services.
Go Purple Day is designed to raise public awareness of domestic abuse, highlight the supports available to those affected, and promote a strong message of zero tolerance for domestic violence. Communities are invited to get involved by wearing purple, lighting buildings in purple, hosting awareness events, and sharing information on social media.
Originally scheduled for May 17th, Go Purple Day was respectfully postponed following the tragic death of Garda Kevin Flatley, who died while on duty earlier this month.
Minister Canney stated: “Go Purple Day is a powerful reminder that domestic abuse affects people in every community. It is vital that we continue to raise awareness, support survivors, and ensure people know where they can turn for help. I commend An Garda Síochána and frontline organisations for their ongoing dedication to tackling this issue.”
“I urge everyone — community groups, schools, workplaces and individuals — to take part on May 30th. By standing together and going purple, we are sending a clear message that domestic abuse has no place in our society.”
Go Purple Day will be marked across the country through events, public displays and social media campaigns, all focused on promoting understanding and access to services.
