Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the Government’s decision to move forward with an ambitious new Convention on Education, which will bring together voices from across the education system and wider society to shape the future of education in Ireland.
“This Convention represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to future-proof our education system and ensure it meets the evolving needs of children, young people and society,” Minister Canney said. “I particularly welcome the inclusive approach being taken—putting learners, parents, teachers, rural communities and people with disabilities at the centre of the conversation.”
The Convention will focus on primarily on primary and post-primary education, but will include transition of all children from early childhood education to primary and from post-primary to higher and further education. It will be underpinned by evidence, equity and inclusion, and will explore key themes such as:
- Education’s role in supporting jobs, innovation and economic growth
- Voices from rural communities, seldom-heard groups and cross-border engagement
- Gender equality, poverty proofing and digital skills
- Environmental sustainability and STEM
- The role of creativity and the arts in a modern education system
An initial plenary session is planned for November 2025, with further national meetings throughout 2026 and a final report to be submitted by the end of that year.
Minister Canney added: “As someone committed to rural development, innovation and inclusion, I will be watching this process closely. This is a vital step in building an education system that empowers every child, regardless of background, geography or ability.”
