Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the extension of the Basic Income for the Arts (BIA) pilot scheme by a further six months to February 2026, ensuring continued support for artists and a robust evidence base to shape future policy.

The BIA pilot, which began in 2022 and costs approximately €35m annually, provides 2,000 artists and creative arts workers with a weekly income of €325. The scheme is designed to support those facing precarious employment and to prevent the loss of artistic talent due to financial insecurity. Evaluation to date shows overwhelmingly positive impacts, with participants reporting improved practice development, retention in the arts, and overall well-being.

“The Basic Income for the Arts scheme is proving to be transformative for artists and cultural workers,” said Minister Canney. “This extension will allow the Government to complete a thorough review of the research, ensuring any future support scheme is backed by strong evidence.”

A successor scheme is being developed for consideration under Budget 2026.
