Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the significant increase in school capitation funding announced as part of Budget 2026. The capitation grant is used for the day to day running of schools and expenses such as heating, lighting, cleaning, insurance, general upkeep in schools and to assist with the purchase of teaching materials and resources.

Minister Canney said the INTO has made strong representations locally and nationally consistently calling for an increase for primary and special schools in particular. They highlighted the rising cost of running schools and the need for sustainable core funding.

Under Budget 2026, the standard capitation rates paid to schools will increase as follows:

  • €50 per pupil for primary and special schools, rising from €224 to €274; and
  • €20 per pupil for post-primary schools, from €386 to €406.

Minister Canney said: “This is a welcome and well-deserved increase for schools. The €50 increase for primary and special schools is very significant. It reflects the strong case made by the INTO and by school leaders across the country. This increase will provide real and practical support to schools in meeting the day-to-day costs of keeping classrooms warm, lights on, and learning resources in place.”

Minister Canney added that the decision demonstrates the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the education system at every level.

“Our schools are at the heart of every community. This Budget recognises that and ensures they are properly funded to continue providing the highest standard of education and care for children across the country.”
