Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports and Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers, Seán Canney TD, has welcomed the commencement of long-overdue water mains replacement works in North Galway between Caherlistrane and Carheens, saying the upgrade will bring much-needed improvements to local water infrastructure.

The works, which are set to begin next Monday, 28 April, will see over 3km of ageing water mains replaced between Caherlistrane and Carheens. The project, delivered by Uisce Éireann under the National Leakage Reduction Programme, promises a more secure and reliable water supply for communities in the area.

Minister Canney said: “I am delighted to see these vital works finally taking place. This is a long-overdue investment in local infrastructure. For far too long, residents and businesses have endured frequent outages and disruptions due to ageing pipes. The replacement of over 3km of mains will bring welcome relief and a vastly improved water supply.”

The new pipes will be installed along the L2111 road—from its junction with the R333, through the townland of Caltra, to Carheens Crossroads—replacing over 3,000 metres of old, damaged pipework. The project will not only reduce leakage and bursts but also improve operational efficiency for Uisce Éireann.

Minister Canney added: “This upgrade is happening right in my constituency, and I know firsthand the frustration caused by repeated water outages. It is positive to see these works finally taking place.”

Works are expected to be completed by early Autumn. Traffic management will be in place throughout the project, but local and emergency access will be maintained. Uisce Éireann will also provide residents with at least 48 hours’ notice of any planned water outages during the course of the works.
