Seán Canney TD, Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, has welcomed the allocation of funding to community projects in Gort and Athenry under the latest round of the Community Recognition Fund.

The funding is part of a nationwide €17 million investment announced by Minister Dara Calleary, with over €1m million secured for County Galway alone across 12 projects.

Minister Canney said: “This is another welcome boost for County Galway and I’m particularly pleased to see strong support for projects in Gort and Athenry—both of which will benefit from vital upgrades to local facilities that serve the wider community.”

In Gort, €81,121 has been awarded to Gort Community Council Ltd for the construction of a multipurpose storage room in the town’s community centre. This investment will enhance the centre’s capacity to host events, services, and local group activities.

In Athenry, €52,000 has been allocated to St. Mary’s GAA Club to carry out accessibility works at the car park and clubhouse—ensuring that the facility is inclusive and welcoming for all members of the community.

“These projects are a reflection of the energy and dedication of local groups who work tirelessly to improve life in their towns. I want to commend those behind the applications,” Minister Canney added.

The Community Recognition Fund is designed to support towns and villages that have welcomed new arrivals in recent years, enhancing local infrastructure and building stronger, more inclusive communities.
