Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the announcement that the HSE has lodged a planning application for the proposed extension of the Emergency Department at Portiuncula University Hospital with Galway County Council.
“This is a very welcome and much-needed investment in healthcare infrastructure for the region,” said Minister Canney. “The proposed €12 million development will significantly enhance emergency care capacity and create a better environment for patients and staff alike.”
The 310m² single-storey extension will include nine additional patient cubicles, a gynaecology treatment room, clinical and staff support areas, and an accessible reception that will link the new build to the existing Emergency Department. The plans also include a dedicated paediatric waiting area and toilet facilities to improve the experience for younger patients and their families.
In addition to the new build, the project includes a phased programme of internal refurbishment works to the existing Emergency Department. These will provide additional treatment bays, reconfigured storage and staff support areas, and upgraded staff changing rooms. At the exiting lower ground floor level, a new public entrance lobby with security room will be created, alongside a reconfigured ambulance drop-off and set-down area.
The external works will include reconfiguration of the internal road network to a one-way traffic system around the Emergency Department, a new accessible set-down area, improved ambulance access, a pedestrian crossing, and enhanced site accessibility and safety overall.
“This project is an important step forward in improving healthcare services for communities across East Galway, Roscommon, Offaly, North Tipperary and Westmeath. It is part of an overall programme for the development of healthcare infrastructure in Galway,” Minister Canney added.
Subject to planning approval, the next stage will be to move to tender and appointment of a contractor for the construction phase.
