Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed progress on key flood relief schemes in Ballinasloe and Gort following a meeting this morning with Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), together with Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council.

Also in attendance were Minister Noel Grealish, Deputies Mairéad Farrell and John Connolly, and Councillor David Collins, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council.

Minister Canney welcomed confirmation that the Ballinasloe flood relief scheme is on track to proceed to public exhibition in early 2026. He also noted that the Gort Lowlands scheme is now in the final stages of environmental assessment and will be submitted to the OPW for approval shortly.

“These two schemes are of major significance to their communities.” said Minister Canney. “It is encouraging to see clear progress on both, and I will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to support their timely delivery.”

The meeting also included updates on the Oranmore to Kinvara coastal protection project—which is awaiting the outcome of a feasibility study, the Clifden and Portumna flood relief schemes and a range of works being delivered under the OPW’s Minor Works Scheme, which is working well in the county.

Minister Canney thanked Galway County Council, the OPW, and all stakeholders for their continued work in advancing flood protection solutions across the county.
